Louise Bourgeois’ Maman: The Immensity of Maternal Love

Reflections on the giant spider sculpture and a mother’s enduring presence

Just around the corner stands the enormous room housing the giant spider sculpture, Maman. Its presence is eerie yet majestic. From the delicate tips of its legs, you can almost hear a soft sobbing.

The artist’s mother was a seamstress, tirelessly protecting her family with thread and needle. This memory is both a deep trauma and a profound source of inspiration for her art.

The relentless spinning of thread, the constant toil without rest, and the raw, instinctive maternal love it symbolizes—all resonate deeply. Standing before Maman, I realize just how immense a mother's presence truly is.
